The Comics Coaching Lab: Barbecue Edition

Six competencies. Six coaching relationships. One backyard table where you practice every hard conversation.

This course walks you through ICF Competencies 3 through 8, Establishes Agreement, Cultivates Trust and Safety, Maintains Presence, Listens Actively, Evokes Awareness, and Facilitates Client Growth, through the same illustrated cast from the Coaching Comics Lab, now gathered around the barbecue.

Each module pairs a comic style scenario with a real client to coach: Sabrina working through what to focus on when everything feels urgent, Big Jon learning what it means to actually be supported, Kev slowing down instead of solving, Grace finding her voice, Scuba Steve going past the jokes, and Kayleaf writing her next chapter.

Practice live with each client through AI-powered coaching conversations, then get warm, developmental mentor feedback on your session, grounded in the PCC Minimum Skills Requirements, built to help you grow into your next level of mastering the work.

What This Lab Actually Is

This is hands-on coaching practice across the full arc of a session, not just the open or the close. Every skill shows up first as a short comic with a cast you get to know, then you take the chair and try it on a client who talks back, until the move feels like yours.

The framework isn’t the point. You absorb it until it becomes part of how you naturally coach, then trust it enough to be fully present with the person in front of you, because that’s where the real magic happens.

You move through the whole spread, landing a clear agreement, building trust and safety, staying present, listening at every level, evoking real awareness, and closing a session so growth actually gets designed, owned, and carried forward. Once the six competencies are yours, you’re free to just coach.

What You’ll Practice:

  • Landing a clear topic with a client, so a session has real direction from the start
  • Cultivating trust and safety, so a client brings more of themselves into the room
  • Staying present with the whole person, not just the problem in front of you
  • Listening closely enough to catch a client’s exact words, emotions, and energy shifts
  • Evoking real awareness in a client, without supplying the insight yourself
  • Closing a session well, so growth gets designed, owned, and carried forward
  • Telling the difference between good coaching and masterful coaching, and growing from one toward the other

Who This Is For:

This is for coaches who want the complete PCC marker map, not just the bookends of a session.

  • If you are working toward a credential and want full session reps, open through close, this gives you a place to build every move until it feels steady.
  • If you are already an experienced coach and want to deepen your range across all six competencies, this shows you the layer past good, the one that hands growth back to the client.
  • If you are early in your journey and want to see the whole session practiced, start to finish, this walks you through it one comic and one client at a time.

However you came to coaching, if you want a session that holds together from the first question to the last, you are in the right room.
