Welcome, Before We Begin
A short introduction to the program, what it is, why it exists, and how to move through it.

Module 1: Sitting Down, Whose Session Is This?
The foundation of the whole approach. Explore the High Five, trust, safety, rapport, connection, respect, and why coaching only works when both people show up to build it together.
0/2
Module 2: Finding Your Balance, What Brought You to the Swing
Before any technique, a coach has to know what's actually being asked for. This module introduces two practical tools: reading what a client's uncertainty is really signaling, and inviting the client to directly shape how the session will go.

Module 3: Rocking Together, The Five Ways to Work
With trust and focus established, this module covers the five rhythms a coaching conversation can move through, Collaboration, Action, Reflection, Empathy, and Education, and how a session flows between them without the coach forcing the direction.

Module 4: When the Swing Creaks, Repair, Discomfort, and Real Magic
Not every session feels easy, and this module is about the sessions that don't. Work through real scenarios, a shaky start, a small breach of trust, a moment of resistance, and learn how repair and discomfort are often where the deepest coaching work happens.

The Porch Swing Approach

I want to start with a small question, the kind that sneaks up on you.

Whose session is this?

We say it’s the client’s space. We say that a lot. This is your time, your session, your work. And then right behind it comes the list. We start on time, we end on time, I ask the questions, you do the answering.

I’ve been sitting with this for a while now. If it’s really their space, I wonder why it comes wrapped in so many rules before we’ve even said hello.

The coaching session is a porch swing between two front doors. A place where you meet in the middle, and you build something together that only becomes possible through both of you.

You hold the container. They bring the content. You both bring the courage.

That’s the whole approach in one sentence. Everything else in this program is just teaching you how to do that well.

The High Five

What makes that swing hold weight comes down to five things. Trust, safety, rapport, connection, and respect. I call it the High Five of a coaching relationship, and I mean that literally. Think about what a high five actually is. Two hands meeting. It means something the moment there’s contact.

Trust and safety can both be present in the room, and the magic still waits for the client’s hand to rise and meet yours. Even the safest, most trustworthy coach in the world still waits for the client to meet them halfway. Magic shows up when both hands meet.

A quick walk through the five, because you’re going to hear these words a lot in this program, and I want you hearing them the way I mean them.

Trust says, I believe you can handle whatever comes up here.

Safety says, this space can hold whatever you bring.

Rapport says, we’re going to find our rhythm together, even when it gets bumpy.

Connection says, you’re with someone in this.

Respect says, this is your story, your pace, your truth to find.

I think about a client. They had been talking in circles for two sessions, finding their footing slowly. In session three, they stopped mid-sentence and said, I don’t think I’ve ever said this out loud before. And then they did.

They kept talking after that, a little slower, a little steadier. That’s the high five landing. That’s the moment the hands actually met.

Magic Is Quiet

Something matters here for everything we build from this point forward. Magic in coaching shows up quietly, most of the time.

It’s the slight lean forward when someone feels seen for the first time. It’s the pause after a question, where something true finally has room to show up. It’s a client who says, I know what I need to do; I just needed to feel it, and lets that be enough. You feel it happen anyway.

Magic shows up when the coach listens fully. When the client breathes and stays present. When the silence between you gets to just be silence.

Both Hands Have to Show Up

The high five is something you build together with the client, session by session.

That means some sessions, the magic is still on its way, and that’s simply timing. You’ve brought your hand up, and the client is getting ready to bring theirs. Waiting for them, on their terms, in their time, that’s the work. That’s coaching.

Sometimes magic shows up in a session that feels genuinely uncomfortable. I had a client once tell me, mid-session, this is really uncomfortable. I want to do this, and I’m struggling to like you right now. They were half joking. They were also completely serious.

That was real magic. They trusted me while they wrestled with liking me in that moment. They stayed in the container. A strong high five can hold discomfort. It’s built for it.

Your Invitation

Before we go further into this program, take a moment to pause here with me.

Think about your own high five. Where does your magic actually live? When did you last feel it? Something you allowed, more than something you did.

That’s where we’re starting from. A relationship, built one honest hand at a time.

In the next module, we’re going to explore what happens when a client sits down on that swing and says, I don’t know. I’ll show you why that phrase can mean about seven different things, and why an accurate guess protects the trust you just built.

See you there.
