Welcome. I’m glad you’re here.
My name is Ken McKellar. I’ve spent years as a coach, a mentor coach, and a supervisor, and somewhere along the way, I started noticing something. The coaches who create real transformation for their clients aren’t the ones with the most techniques. They’re the ones who understand something simpler and harder to teach: presence, trust, and the relationship itself.
This program is built around that idea. It’s called The Porch Swing Approach, and here’s where that name comes from.
A coaching session isn’t your space, and it isn’t the client’s space either. It’s a third space, a porch swing between two front doors, a place where you meet in the middle and build something together that neither of you could build alone. You hold the container. They bring the content. You both bring the courage.
What You’re About to Learn
This program has four modules, and they build on each other in order.
Module one is about the foundation: five relational conditions- trust, safety, rapport, connection, and respect- that make everything else possible. I call it the High Five.
Module two is about listening well, especially in the moments when a client says, I don’t know. You’ll learn why that phrase can mean several different things, and how to find out which one you’re hearing.
Module three is about the five ways a coaching conversation can move, collaboration, action, reflection, empathy, and education, and how to let the client guide which way the session goes.
Module four is about the harder moments, discomfort, small breaches of trust, and what real repair looks like. This is often where the deepest work actually happens.
How to Move Through This
Take these in order. Each module builds on the one before it, and the language and ideas will make more sense with that foundation underneath them.
Each lesson comes with audio you can listen to, along with the full written script below it, so you can read along, revisit a section later, or just listen if that fits your day better.
There’s no need to rush this. Sit with each module for as long as it takes to feel like the ideas are actually yours, not just something you heard once.
One Last Thing
This program isn’t a script to memorize or a checklist to run through. It’s a way of thinking about the relationship at the center of your work, and how to build it with real intention.
I built this from real coaching moments, real successes, and real sessions that felt hard in the moment and mattered anyway. My hope is that somewhere in these four modules, you find language for something you already sensed but never quite had words for.
The porch swing is ready when you are. Let’s sit down.
